How the April 15 War Transformed the Work of Sudan’s Human Rights Defenders

The April 15 conflict marked a turning point for human rights work in Sudan. As violence expanded across states, defenders found themselves exposed to unprecedented risks—from targeted arrests to displacement and loss of communication networks. Many were forced to flee their homes, while others continued working under threat to document violations.

In response, defender networks rapidly expanded beyond Darfur to reach all states of Sudan. Representatives were appointed across regions to coordinate protection strategies, support relocation when necessary, and maintain vital channels of communication. This expansion became essential for ensuring continuity of work in documenting violations and advocating for justice, even in the most challenging environments.

Despite facing life-threatening danger, Sudanese human rights defenders continue to play a critical role in preserving evidence of abuses, supporting victims, and advocating against war crimes. Their resilience demonstrates extraordinary courage, and strengthening protection mechanisms for them remains a top priority.
