The Human Cost of Displacement: How the War Redefined Life for Millions in Sudan

The war in Sudan has triggered one of the world’s largest displacement crises in decades. Families have fled from Khartoum, Darfur, Kordofan, Gezira, and other regions—often leaving behind everything they own. Many now live in overcrowded camps or makeshift shelters, where access to food, healthcare, and education remains extremely limited.

Displacement not only affects daily survival but also hinders human rights work. Defenders who once documented violations or supported victims are now struggling to stay safe, maintain communication, and rebuild networks in new locations. Yet despite these obstacles, many continue working quietly from camps, border towns, and host communities.

For Sudan to regain stability, addressing displacement is essential. This includes supporting both affected families and the defenders who advocate for their rights. Without meaningful support, generations of Sudanese risk losing access to justice, education, and basic human dignity.
